Credit-card optimisation is one of those areas where it is easy to spend hours saving francs. The useful question is therefore not which Swiss card offers the longest list of benefits, but which combination produces a reasonable return with almost no recurring cost or effort.

For most people living in Switzerland, our preferred approach in 2026 is surprisingly simple: use a free cashback credit card for spending in Swiss francs, and a low-cost debit card for foreign-currency spending. Trying to make one card do everything usually means accepting either a weaker cashback rate or expensive foreign-exchange charges.

The short comparison

*Debit rather than credit card.

Swisscard currently charges no annual fee and pays 1% cashback on qualifying American Express purchases and 0.25% with the accompanying Mastercard or Visa. Certo! One also has no annual fee, paying 1% at three merchants selected by the cardholder and 0.25% elsewhere.

Why Swisscard and Certo! work well together

The American Express Cashback Card is the stronger pure cashback engine because 1% applies to qualifying Amex purchases rather than only three chosen merchants. Its limitation is acceptance: Amex is widespread in Switzerland, but Mastercard and Visa remain more universal.

That is where Certo! One fits. Instead of choosing between the two, a cost-conscious household can use the Swisscard Amex when accepted and Certo! One where Mastercard is more convenient, particularly at three merchants that account for a large part of recurring household expenditure.

The gain will not transform anyone’s finances. That is precisely why the system should remain simple.

Do not use cashback to justify expensive foreign exchange

This is where the arithmetic becomes more important than the marketing.

Swisscard charges 2.5% on foreign-currency or foreign transactions. Certo! One charges a 1.5% foreign-currency processing fee.

A 1% reward cannot compensate for a 2.5% transaction charge. On CHF 5,000 of foreign expenditure, a 2.5% fee represents CHF 125 before considering any exchange-rate effects, whereas 1% cashback is only CHF 50.

For spending abroad, we would therefore switch cards. Bank WIR’s Bankpaket top currently charges no currency-conversion surcharge or card-payment commission, while neon plus removes neon’s 0.35% FX surcharge for CHF 20 per year.

Guidefinances view

For domestic spending, Swisscard Cashback remains our preferred cashback engine, with Certo! One as an excellent Mastercard complement. For foreign spending, neither should be the default choice.

The broader lesson matters more than the individual card: separate rewards from foreign exchange. A card that gives you CHF 50 of cashback while quietly taking CHF 100 in currency charges has not rewarded you.

And whatever card you choose, pay the statement in full. Cashback becomes irrelevant very quickly when revolving-credit interest enters the calculation.

Guidefinances preferred setup: Swisscard Cashback Amex + Certo! One for CHF spending; Bank WIR Debit or neon plus for foreign-currency spending.
