Buy information in the right order
The cheapest useful test is the one that changes a decision. Begin with history, blood pressure and validated screening; escalate only when risk, symptoms or prior results justify more data.

Recommended sequence
A three-level check-up ladder
Validated baseline
Primary-care review, family history, medicines, blood pressure, waist/weight trend, age- and risk-based cancer screening, dental/vision/hearing review, sleep-apnoea risk and mental-health symptoms. For brain health, control of vascular risks and hearing loss is usually more actionable than exotic biomarkers.
Typical financing: insurance/public system where eligible; otherwise a modest consultation and basic measurements.
Focused blood work
Order only values that answer a question: for example lipids, glucose/HbA1c, kidney/liver markers, blood count, thyroid or deficiency tests when history supports them. Repeat abnormal results before building a long-term protocol.
German self-pay route: individual analyses are billed under GOÄ and many markers are inexpensive, while broader panels add up quickly.
Advanced diagnostics
DEXA, coronary imaging, sleep studies, neuropsychology, genetics or MRI should have a defined indication, interpretation plan and follow-up budget. Premium memberships such as Fountain Life combine extensive biomarkers, DEXA and full-body/brain MRI, but are not equivalent to a universally recommended screening programme.
Financing: high upfront or annual membership cost, plus travel and downstream follow-up.
Cross-border option
German self-pay laboratories: a lower-cost middle path
Mein Direktlabor/Bioscientia offers direct-access testing at multiple German locations, often without a referral. Prices vary by location and are based on GOÄ. Use a clinician or laboratory physician to avoid purchasing a long list of values without a plan.
| Example item | Illustrative listed price | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Large blood count | €5.38 | Low unit price; interpretation and blood draw may be additional. |
| Glucose or standard lipid marker | about €2.68 each | A panel contains several separate charges. |
| HbA1c | €13.41 | Useful for longer-term glucose exposure when clinically relevant. |
| TSH, ferritin or vitamin B12 | €16.76 each | Best used when symptoms, diet or prior results support testing. |
| Vitamin D | €32.18 | Do not confuse a test result with a reason for indefinite high-dose supplementation. |
| Blood draw | €4.20 | Location-specific fees and consultation charges can apply. |
These are examples from one current location price list and are not a quote. Confirm the selected location, total panel and consultation cost before travelling.
Premium comparison
Fountain Life versus a staged European pathway
Premium annual programme
- Consolidated physician-led experience
- Large biomarker panel
- DEXA/body composition
- Full-body and brain MRI
- Potential convenience and data integration
Main budget risk: incidental findings, follow-up procedures, travel and services not included in the headline package.
Staged European pathway
- Primary care and standard screening first
- Focused German self-pay blood work when needed
- Specialist imaging only with an indication
- Repeat testing based on decision thresholds
- Lower upfront cost and less data overload
Main advantage: spend rises only when a result is likely to change management.
